The English Department at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College is one of the most spirited departments in the university. The faculty believes in creating an engaging environment in which students are groomed for wholesome development. The students under the guidance of the professors organize several extracurricular activities throughout the semesters. The department organizes monthly lectures on pertinent topics by the literary stalwarts. Apart from the lecture series, the department screens films to expose young scholars to various cinematic movements across the world. The focus is on introducing students to new ideas via literature of several kinds; the written, the spoken, the cinematic, etc. We pride ourselves on our students who graduate with more than a degree in literature.

- The Department of English has been very actively engaged in bringing to the College an environment of literary and cultural reverberance. We usually combine academic sessions and intellectual discussions with fun, frolic and delectable lunch spreads. We have organized various talks and seminars in the past, and our literary festivals have been the talk of the town, our highlight, our USP.
- We have had distinguished speakers coming to the College for talks, which turn out to be stimulating discussions rather than monologues. Noted scholars like Sukrita Paul Kumar and Alan Johnson have come to deliver lectures on Partition Literature and Postcolonialism in the last two years respectively.
- The Department organized a two day seminar on W. B. Yeats in collaboration with Shaw’s Corner, India, and with support from the the Embassy of Ireland on October 17-8, 2014. The seminar had acclaimed Yeats scholars like Prof. R.W.Desai, Dr. Santosh Pall, Dr. Shernaz Cama, Prof. A.B.Sharma, Dr. B.M.Bhalla, and Dr. Brati Biswas presenting illuminating papers on the famous Irish poet and the relevance of reading him in the Indian context. The seminar also incorporated a few poetry reading sessions, a performance from Yeats’s play Purgatory, and a documentary screening.
- The Department also organized another one-day seminar on February 2,2015. The seminar saw the participation of renowned international scholars and creative writers. The first session had papers by Prof. Anne Brewster who read out a paper on “Australian Aboriginal Women’s Writing and Dalit Literature” and Dr. Gillian Dooley, who spoke on Jane Austen and V.S.Naipaul. The second session was a creative writing session wherein prominent writers like Roswitha Joshi and Onyeka Nwelue shared fascinating anecdotes and stirring thoughts about their own tryst with the ever-eluding process of creative writing.
- We would like to end on a high note, the highlight mentioned above. We are famous in the literary circles and among the students of the University and the city for our two-day annual literary and cultural extravaganza. We called it Epiphaneia in the year 2013, Pulp Fest in the succeeding year, and the one that awaits you this year is a celebration of the intrinsic bond between Literature and Cinema, Cinedapt, which is going to be organized on March 24-25,2015.
- Along with a host of literary activities and student competitions like creative writing, scene enactment, sketching/ poster making, debating, literary quiz, musical competitions like the battle of bands etc, which students look forward to throughout the year (because of their passion and our rewards), we have organized a Kavi Sammelan and a Nukkad Natak competition as a part of Epiphaneia ’13, a Meet the Author session with Anuja Chauhan and Sami Ahmad Khan during Pulp Fest ’14. For the mega event that we are organizing in Cinedapt ’15, stay glued. We promise we would not dissapoint you!
