The Department of Geography, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College is one of the most vibrant departments of the college. The department has completed 53 glorious years since its establishment. It has emerged as an epitome of knowledge with a total of 15 faculty members. The departmental research activities focus on exploring contemporary issues, while offering a holistic perspective of knowledge to the students. The department has a Cartography Laboratory. The Remote Sensing and GIS Laboratories are in the developing phase, which will offer students a state-of-the-art hands-on training. The department is now a network institute of the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) outreach program of capacity building.
To inculcate all-round development and to facilitate skill enhancement and learning among the students, the department regularly organizes field visits, conferences, workshops, seminars and a career fair, where students receive first-hand experience and learn empirically from different spheres of life. The graduates passing out from the department work in various capacities at multinational companies, consulting firms, banking sector, urban planning, civil services, teaching, academia, climate policy and action, global diplomacy consulting, environmental management, social policymaking, NGOs, etc.
The Department has a Geography Association that has remained active in imparting up-to-date knowledge on contemporary issues through activities like special lectures, workshops, and training courses. The Geography Association also celebrates its annual Geo-fest namely ‘Vasundhara’, in which 22 Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, University of Delhi, NAAC Accredited ‘A’ Grade students participate in inter-college competitions, such as debates, paper presentations, poster making, map making, photography, skit, quiz, and many more activities based on geographical knowledge. Every year ‘Landscape’, an annual geographical magazine, is brought out by the department that showcases and brings out the talent of young geographers from the department. The students are also taken to educational/field visits to expose them to changing ground realities in both the physical and human landscape, field survey techniques like remote sensing, and GIS at various stages from training to research applications.
Geography is best suited for students, who have a knack for both Humanities and Science sides, as the discipline is very well linked. The discipline has a wide scope and the Geography department at SBSC is committed to offer the best of the learning environment.

Under the guidance of teacher in-charge, Dr. Swati Rajput and Staff Advisor, Dr. Poonam Sharma, the students of the department elected their office bearers to the Geography Association for the year 2014-15. The department organized its fresher’s party on 18th September, 2014 to welcome the Ist semester students. The students performed various cultural activities. The 1st semester students also got opportunity to interact and perform on the stage. Dr. V. K. Tyagi, former faculty of the College and Dr. Amrita Bajaj (Deputy Dean Student Welfare) graced the occasion.
To mark the beginning of the activities of Geography Association in the current session, an inaugural function was organized on 24th September, 2014. Prof. B.S. Butola, CSRD, Jawaharlal Nehru University with other faculty members of the department lighted the lamp. Prof. Butola gave an explicit lecture on “Frontiers in Geography”. He emphasised and discussed the new approaches in geography.
The Department also got an opportunity to listen and interact with Prof. Zofia Rączkowska of Head of Department of Geo-environmental Research, Head of the Homerka Laboratory of Fluvial Processes, Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland.She also head of Research Station in the Hala Gąsienicowa and President of the Association of Polish Geomorphologists. She delivered a lecture on PINDARI VALLEY RELIEF AND ITS RECENT TRANSFORMATION which gave an insight into the shrinking and expanding glaciers in Himalayan region.
The department took a one day excursion to PUSA Institute of Agricultural Research on 30th November,2014. The students got an opportunity to visit its campus and museum. It gave them an exposure to learn various aspects of Indian Agriculture. It also gets students aware about modern technology used in Indian agriculture.
The faculty was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Debabrata Mukherjee, a mountaineer guide and well known mountaineer of India. He conquered the EVEREST in the year 2014. He gave his presentation on “Experiences in climbing Everest” on 10th November, 2014. He discussed the challenges faced by the mountaineers to climb Everest.
In the current semester many students got laurels for the department by participating in various academic and cultural activities in various intercollege competitions.
The department plans to organize its annual extravaganza, VASUNDHARA, in the month of February. It will release its magazine “Landscape”, which would focus on the “Cultural mosaics in India”. The department also plans to take its students for a picnic to some natural settings. The annual function of the department would take place in the end of the academic session.

The excursion to Kumaon Region,Uttrakhand for students of semester V was conducted from 29th September -5th October,2014. The coordinator for the trip was Dr. Suraj Mal , Dr. Vishwaraj Sharma, Dr.Vijay Pandey and Dr. Rashmi Anand were part of the entire team. The areas covered include Almora, Ranikhet and Kausani. This excursion included visit to University of Kumaon ,special lectures by experts, tracking, group discussions ,cultural program, field survey of Markets and villages. Prof. G. S.Rawat enlightened students about the concepts of Geo-Portals in Uttrakhand. Field survey conducted by students based on structured questionnaire which analysed later and project report was prepared on Socio-Economic Impact of tourism in Kumaon Region of Uttrakhand.

The department plans to organize its annual extravaganza, VASUNDHARA-2015, with the theme “Cultural Mosaics in Geography” on 12th-13th March, 2015. Prof. Subhendu Ghosh, Department of Biophysics, University of Delhi and classical vocalist delivered the keynote address which was followed by variety of inter-college, inter-university events like cultural pot-porrie, skit, round table, culture and innovation and quiz on the focal theme. The annual magazine Landscape: Cultural Landscape is also released on the occasion.
Department plans to hold National Seminar on “Smart Cities: Challenges and Vision Ahead” on 6th April, 2015 at India International Centre, New Delhi. The seminar will have sessions on different issues concerning the theme viz.transport, communication, governance, environment, housing, economy etc.
